In order to become a registered USA Hockey
official, three steps must be completed. Questions about an official's registration status are among the most common questions answered by the USA Hockey Officiating Program. Below are the answers to frequently asked questions. How do I get an
application? What if I want to use a
paper application? How do I find out who is my
Local Supervisor of Officials? Is there a fee involved
with the officials application? How do I get my open book
exam? How long do I have to take
the open book exam? Where do I find out about
the seminars in my area? How do I get credit for
attending the seminar? Where do I take the closed
book exam? What if I choose not to
take a closed book exam? When will I receive my card
and crest? There is a lot of stuff
going to and from the national office. How long does it take
to receive materials? Is there a way I can check
my registration status? Now that I have my card and
crest and am eligible to officiate, how do I get games?

Summary - FOR PERSONS WANTING TO BECOME A REGISTERED USA HOCKEY OFFICIAL:
Only a currently registered USA HOCKEY Official may referee a USA Hockey Sanctioned game. For the regular season most arena hockey associations are USA sanctioned.
If you wish to become an official you must:
1.) Complete an online registration form with USA Hockey... the web site is www.usahockey.com/michigan_ric go to the officials section it will provide you additional information about becoming an official. There is a registration fee.
2.) You have to attend annually a USA HOCKEY seminar. You may attend ANY seminar and are not limited to one in your district. We will be having 4 seminars here in District 4 - dates, times and locations are now posted or contact me via my email address and we will provide you this information once it is ready.... referee_kawaelde@din-associates.com
3.) After registration (Step 1) new officials will be send a rule book and 50 question open book exam or you may take the exam online.
Once all three steps have been completed you will be sent your credentials and crest - you are now an official ! A tip for first time officials is to complete these three steps as early as possible since the first year does take a few more weeks to process than an existing official who was registered the previous season.
It is the official's responsibility to seek schedulers for game assignments. You are not limited to any area. You are actually certified to work any USA Hockey game anywhere.
We also put on clinics which provide additional training and time on the ice which is NOT part of the USA certification process. This is ice time provided by the association and time spent by our senior officials to better ourselves as a group. These dates will also be posted shortly. THESE CLINICS ARE OPEN TO ALL PERSONS THAT ARE ALREADY OFFICIALS, THOSE NEW OFFICIALS, OR ANYONE WHO IS POTENTIALLY THINKING ABOUT BECOMING AN OFFICIAL BUT IS NOT SURE AND WANTS TO SEE WHAT OFFICIATING IS ALL ABOUT.
